The excitement surrounding the Paris 2024 Olympics has extended beyond the sports arenas and into the world of music. According to Daniel Ek's X (formerly Twitter), CEO of Spotify, French music has seen a rise in popularity following some stellar musical performances at the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Ek shared some data that highlights this trend. "Amazing to see so many people discovering French music on Spotify after some incredible musical performances at the Olympics Opening Ceremony," he tweeted, before diving into the specifics.

One of the most notable surges was for Édith Piaf’s timeless classic, often synonymous with French culture, “L’Hymne à l’Amour,” which saw a 320% increase in streams on July 27, the day after the Opening Ceremony.

Ek also pointed out an increase in streams of Celine Dion’s music. "There was also a surge in streams of @celinedion’s music overall: 65% growth in France and 35% globally," he noted. Dion, though primarily associated with Canada (and representing Switzerland on Eurovision in 1988), sings in both French and English, and her music has long been celebrated in French-speaking countries.

Perhaps the most groundbreaking performance of the night came from the French heavy metal band Gojira: "@GojiraMusic, the first metal band ever to perform at an Olympics opening ceremony, added over 300k followers on Spotify since their performance."

The Olympics have always been a melting pot of cultures, and the Paris 2024 Games are no exception. The growing popularity of French music on Spotify is a testament to the power of cultural exchange, with the Paris 2024 Olympics being its vibrant catalyst.
