VideoLAN has showcased a new feature for its VLC media player at CES 2025: real-time AI-powered subtitling and translation, which operates offline. The demonstration, first shared by VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf on X, showcases how the new feature automatically generates subtitles for videos in over 100 languages without relying on cloud services.

Previously, AI subtitling in VLC had been available through a plug-in utilising OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition system. However, the new feature is integrated directly into the VLC app, which enables real-time subtitle generation and translation. The details about a release date remain unclear.
