Apple has unveiled a series of updates for its audio lineup, including the introduction of new hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2 and a fresh range of colours for AirPods Max. Alongside these, the company also launched the latest AirPods 4, touting them as the most comfortable and advanced headphones they've ever developed.
AirPods 4: Open-Ear Design and Noise Cancellation
The new AirPods 4 come in two models: the standard version and a variant with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Apple's decision to offer ANC in an open-ear design is a first for the company. This feature is designed to balance sound quality with environmental awareness, employing transparency modes to ensure users can remain connected to their surroundings while enjoying the benefits of noise reduction.

Voice isolation technology in these AirPods enhances call clarity, and the new force sensor on the stem allows users to control media and calls with simple gestures. Personalised Spatial Audio, which adapts based on dynamic head tracking, further enhances the listening experience.
New Features for AirPods Max
Apple has also announced updates to the AirPods Max, adding new colours like midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange. The updated model will also support USB-C charging, a long-awaited change that brings the AirPods Max in line with Apple's broader ecosystem.
AirPods Pro 2: A Focus on Hearing Health
This fall, AirPods Pro 2 is set to introduce a hearing health experience, featuring advanced tools for hearing protection, testing, and assistance. Apple’s research found that one in three people are regularly exposed to noise levels that could affect hearing, prompting the company to develop features that help protect users' ears while preserving sound quality.
The Hearing Test on AirPods Pro 2 uses a method called pure-tone audiometry, similar to what is conducted in clinical settings. The results generate a personalised hearing profile, which can be used to fine-tune the AirPods’ audio output for an optimal listening experience. Users can also share their results with healthcare providers.
Moreover, the AirPods Pro 2 will function as a clinical-grade hearing aid for those with mild to moderate hearing loss, offering real-time sound adjustments based on individual hearing profiles. The feature is designed to boost environmental sounds and improve conversational clarity, making everyday interactions easier for those experiencing hearing difficulties.
